Formerly the Bank of New Zealand, this landmark building was full of surprises and provided us with lots of challenges but in the end, the result was  a brilliant Award Winning Design by pak design and a great build project that saw new life breathed into this iconic Feilding Building.

This was the third BNZ bank to be built on this site, with the original  being built way back in  1881.  Upon demolition, many treasured historical items were found dating as far back as 1892.  Of significance was a report about the building, stating that situated in the basement was a ‘strong-room’, for storing of records and vouchers – hence the new Restaurant name – The Strong Room.

The contemporary update commenced in February 2013 with the business opening in September of the same year.  The attention to detail is evident in many features like the retro-styled block cut-out bulkhead suspended from the ceiling on the front bar which was custom designed to fit the era of the 1960’s.

The project was broken down into two stages – base build and fit out.  Both of these presented challenges but with a lot of brainstorming combined with a wealth of skills and knowledge from everyone involved, this incredible environment was achieved.  We had to basically pull this amazing old building back to its bones in a very short time, assess what we had left to work with and then start the rebuild of both structural and aesthetic elements. The outstanding features, finishes, ideas and workmanship that went into the build of The Strong Room are second to none.

In Summary –

A truly magnificent transformation of a site steep in history with the re-build design allowing hospitality to be offered over three levels.   This one off amazing project enforces the importance of retaining historic value and the fact that these buildings can be re strengthened and restored to something very special and all backed by a top team at Humphries Construction.
